Local cuisine
As an amazing blend-up of Bamar, Mon, Thai, Indian and Chinese, Burmese local cuisine represents a lot of culinary highlights. Rice never leaves Burmese’s tables. It’s often eaten along with fish, chicken, prawns or mutton. Curry-based cooking Burmese food goes easier in chilli using, instead, turmeric, ginger, garlic and onions are used more often in their recipes. Foot-legged animals are rarely seen in restaurants, for religionary reasons: Hindus and Buddhists find beef offensive, while nat loathes pork.
Side dish is lentil soup with a bunch of Indian style flavors. The finish dish, la-hpeq dhouq , might look repellently scary with the whole booming mass of leaves, sesame seeds and shrimps. To all the food in Myanmar, does this rule apply: once get beyond your fear, everything is endearing.
Fruits
Avocados, banana, grapefruit, jackfruit, lychee, mango, pomelo, papaya… okay, this is the alphabetical shopping list for tropical fruits in Myanmar. Regional favorites are depending in seasons and areas, always fresh and cheap, per se.
Drinks
International brands like Tiger, ABC Stout, Singha and Beck can be found in Myanmar, but it wouldn’t hurt to try some local specials, right ? People tap out toddy juice from the palms, and it takes overnight for the nonalcoholic stuff to naturally turn into a weakly beer-like strength. This milk drink lures locals with its nutty aroma and slightly sour flavour, same to you.
Fruit juice and fruit-flavour liquor are also nice choices of drinks. Chinese teashops serve you something different. Drinking in a riverside open bar can be pleasant.
