Mrauk U
Mrauk U lies roughly 11 km east of the Kaladan River on the banks of its minor tributaries. The town is located on a small outcrop of the Rakhine Yoma on the eastern side of the Kaladan's alluvial plain. Thus, the surrounding countryside is hilly yet also contains a great deal of marshes, mangroves and lakes.
Mrauk U - the Golden city or the royal capital of Rakhine is another historical treasure after Bagan. Fly up to Sittwe, the nearest gate way to Mrauk-U from where a five-hour boat riding will take you to Mrauk-U. Situated in the Arakan Range and facing the Bay of Bengal, the capital Mrauk-U (1430-1784 A.D) had been a thriving city of Rakhine State ruled by his own king. As Mrauk U and her kingdom prospered, the kings, ministers and peasants built many pagodas and temples around the town to reflect their faith. Thus, Mrauk U houses a rich collection of temples and pagodas second only to the Central Burmese town of Bagan, in Myanmar. Most of Mrauk U's temples were constructed of hewn stone bricks, unlike the mud and clay bricks of Bagan. In your Mrauk U tours, you can see the most notable temples in Mrauk U are the Shite-thaung Temple (Temple of 80,000 Images or Temple of Victory), Htukkanthein Temple (Htukkan Ordination Hall), the Koe-thaung Temple (Temple of 90,000 Images) and the Five Mahn pagodas.
Once in Mwauk U, its 150 or so temples stand atop, under and between rounded hillrocks so curved and perfect they look like they are from a child's drawing. From thoes who have visited Bagan,Mrauk U is at once smaller-in temple size and scope-but more alive in the sense that thatched hut villages perforate the site, with refuse fire adding a smoky haze at dusk, as shepherds lead their animals home. Curiously, locals call out 'bye bye' and wave.
One of the most interesting time to visit Mrauk U is during the huge weeklong paya pwe(pagoda festival)held near Dukkanthein Paya in mid-May.
