Dalat Brief Introduction

Forget everything you know about Vietnam - Dalat is different. The mountainous city's flourishing artistic community, easygoing atmosphere, and frankly bizarre "Dalat Eiffel" has led to the affectionate nickname "Le Petit Paris." Doctor/adventurer Alexandre Yersin was smitten by the alpine climate and pine forests during the 1892 expedition, following his suggestion that they build a city, the French displaced ethnic Vietnamese and K'ho people and established the resort city of Dalat in 1910. Today, the hills are alive with the sounds of the tourism. Known as "The City of Flowers" for its abundant flower market, Dalat has perfected the art of the vacation destination, both for foreigners and for Vietnamese. Romantic lakes and a booming flower industry make this the honeymoon capital of Vietnam; the clean air and abundant cafes still captivate the French. Simpler pleasures come from meandering the streets (closed to traffic on weekends) and enjoying mountain views. Most recently, Dalat has become the epicenter of adventure tourism and eIOTourism in southern Vietnam, flinging eager backpackers into ravines and onto mountaintops. No mater what you fancy, this enlightened city offers it soaked with a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere all its own.

Xuan Huong Lake Xuan Huong Lake
This lake is the first thing you see in Dalat, the city is built on the slopes rising from its shores; the man-make lake curves east from the city center. Around it you can find swan- shaped paddle boats, opportun -ities to ride a horse with famous and wonderfully kitschy "Dalat Cowboys," and a couple of bar- restaurants on the lake shore. The most present way to see the lake, however, is to stroll along the 7km sealed path circumscribing Dalat's pride and joy.

Valley of Love
This is the central attractions of Dalat for many visitors Vietnamese; you would be hard-pressed to find a westerner here. Once, this was a peaceful mountain lake in the northeast outskirts of the city, where lovers would steal away. Now, it has taken on an embarrassingly tacky carnival atmosphere. Monkeys in cages, sun-swamped paddle boats, and creaky amusement park rides are a ridiculous prelude to the famous "Dalat Cowboys," Vietnamese dressed in Hollywood cowboy costumes who leaded tourists around on a horse for a few thousand dong.

Bao Dai's Summer Palace     Built in 1933, the palace was the Emperor Bao Dai's midsummer retreat. It's been well-maintained and looksBao Dai's Summer Palace much like it did in the 1930s, resplendent in Art Deco magnificence. The palace is sparsely furnished and offers very little to see or do. A grand golden bust of the emperor and a glass map of Vietnam are the only artifacts of note, perfect for an interior designer seeking retro inspiration. (Up Le Hong Phong. Open daily 7-11am and 1:30-4pm.)

Lat Village

The nine hamlets of Lat Village are 12km north of Dalat at the base Lang Bian Mountain. Only five of the hamlets are actually Lat; the residents of the other four are members of the Chill, Ma and Koho tribes, each of which are speaks a different dialect. Traditionally, Lat houses are built on piles with rough plank walls and a thatched roof. The people here eke out a living on 300 hectares of land, growing rice, coffee, black beans and sweet potatoes. Economics have forced many villagers into producing charcoal, a lowly task often performed by Montagnards elsewhere. Classes in the village's school are conducts in Vietnamese rather than tribal languages. Lat has one Catholic and one Protestant church. A Koho-language Bible (Sra Goh) was published by Protestants in 1971; a Lat language bible, prepared by Catholic, appeared a year later. Both dialects are quite similar and are written in a Latin-based script. To get to Lat from Dalat, head north on D Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, at Trung Lam Hamlet there's a fork in the road marked by a street sign. Continue straight on (northwest) rather than to the left. By bicycle the 12km trip from Dalat to Lat takes about 40 minutes. On foot it's a two-hour walk.

The mountainous terrain of Dalat provides quality waterfall exploration, even though the majority of them have been fenced off and turned into pseudo-amusement parks. The closest to town is the Datanla Falls. At the bottom of the steep climb through lush forest, the falls spray mist over anyone in the proximity. Although not very high, they are the strongest in the region. After the steady climb back out, stop at the restaurant to reenergize over a drink and a spectacular view. (5km south of town off of Hwy. 20; look for a sign. Open daily 7am-5pm.) Prenn Falls is an attraction beloved by Vietnamese tourists - the actual falls are part of the experience. AboveDalat surrounding Waterfalls the falls are a gaggle of mock thatched-roof huts selling of drinks, but the real action is below the falls. You can descend by a stairs or mini-cable car and, once below the falls, paddle around the lagoon, visit the crocodile pond, or dress in local ethnic minority dress for a photo (this make a great souvenir). The falls themselves are quite a sight as tumble over a large outcrop - it's even possible to walk underneath them. The only really worthwhile attraction here, though, is a walk to the top of the hill for a view of the surrounding country. (10km south of townDalat surrounding Waterfalls off Hwy. 20; open daily 7am-5pm.) The areas south of Dalat also have many spectacular water falls, forms as the highlands flatten into the Mekong Delta. These are easily accessible from Hwy. 20, yet are refreshingly free of visitors. In the dry season, their full force is not apparent. Gougah Falls, 40km south, can be seam from the highway; Pongour Falls, 55km south, are massive; and Dambri Falls, the best and highest, are about 20km north of Bao Loc.
