Notre Dame Cathedral The main seat of Catholicism in Southern Vietnam, this cathedral features red bricks and stained glass imported from French during the colonial era. Inside, figures of national saints and plaques donated by parishioners provide insight into how Vietnamese Catholic practices differ from those in other regions of the world. (District 1: Locate on a paved square opposite the Post Office, near the intersection of Le Duan and Dong Khoi. Open daily 5-11am and 3-5:30pm. Mass in English: Sun 9:30am. Reunification Palace First built by the French in 1868, then reconstructed by South Vietnam President Ngo Dinh Diem after a 1962 bombing, this place was home to several South Vietnamese He- ads of state before Viet Cong tanks crashed through its gates on April 30, 1975. When a South Vietnam general told the VC officers that he was prepared to transfer power to them, one officer famously replied. "You can not give up what you do not have." Visitors to the palace today will find it frozen in its 1975 state, complete with residential rooms, subterra- nean war chambers, and an entertainment complex. |

Ho Chi Minh Museum Everyone's favorite Vietnamese national hero and icon, Ho Chi Minh, is the subject of his collection, which is housed in a pink French colonial building (called Nha Rong) the Saigon River. Beside a lot of photographs, a number of Ho Chi Minh's personal items and letters are on display. Not surprisingly, the museum takes a non-controversial view of the president; however, the international journal articles here may give you insight into how the rest of the world saw him. (District4. Nguyen Tat Than, just across the river from District1. Open Sun and Tues-Sat 7:30-11:30am and 1:30-4:30pm.) |

Central Post Office Started to be built in 1886 and completed in 1891 under architect Villedieu's design, this magnificent building was located on a high hillock by the side of the municipal cathedral with Hai Ba Trung avenue in the back. The building's front side was adorned with recta- ngle squares inscribed with the names of telegraphic and electric inventors together with figures of men and women wearing laurel wreaths. A big clock was hung over the dome of the building. Inside the building, visitors can see two historical maps, one is "Saigon and its environments" created in 1892 and "Telegraphic network in South Vietnam and Cambodia" created in 1936. The Central Post Office is available with 35 customer serv- icing counters equipped with up-to-date telecom facilities that enable direct telegraphic contact with any areas of the globe and any place in the country. In addition, there are various services such as registered postal parcel time alarm, express mail service, cultural souvenir products, telegraphic philately, telegraphic gift. |

Cho Lon market District5 (often called Cho Lon, meaning Big Market) is home to HCMC's large ethnic Ch- inese population. It has a rather different feel than the rest of the city. As the name sugge- sts, mercantilism is the way of life here; two major indoor markets (An Dong and Binh Tay) are located in the area. Chinese medicine shops lie along Hai Thuong Lan Ong; it is worth visiting just to take in the sights and smells. Some other shops around the neighborhood sell brilliantly colored ceremonial decorations, most notably dragon heads. There is a slew of pagodas in Con Lon, each one constructed and operated by a different Chinese group. Thien Hua is the most active; pagoda enthusiasts may also want to check out Tam Son. |

Giac Lam pagoda Over 260 years old, Giac Lam is worth the hike from the city center. The path to the pago- da leads visitors past a modern religious tower, a gigantic Buddha, and monk's tombs. The pagoda itself, supported by dark teak pillars, is a dizzying maze of alters. The funeral hall contains photos of the deceased, while the main sanctuary houses an enormous and complicated altar to a host of Buddhist and Taoist deities. Here monks perform their rituals and worshippers offer prayers. Around the pogoda are several courtyards, one of which holds a sacred Bodhi tree. |

Cu Chi Tunnels Few sights capture the tenacity and ingenuity of the Vietnamese guerrillas better than the Cu Chi Tunnels. The Viet Cong developed this elaborate network of narrow passageways, which allowed them to infiltrate enemy camps while remaining almost completely hidden. At one point the multi-level subterranean system stretched all the way from Cu Chi to the Cambodia border, and included field hospitals, weapons facilities, and even kitchens. To- day visitors can climb through the reconstructed 100m portion of the tunnels, although if claustrophobia sets in, there are closer escape routes. Above ground, there are gruesome exhibitions of the booby traps used against enemy forces, some recreations of life in the tunnels, and also a shooting range, where visitors can fire authentic military rifles at a target. |
