Kandawgyi Lake (Royal Lake)
A good place to take a stroll and have a meal in Yangon is the Kandawyi Lake. Located in the city center, the Kandawgyi Lake (Great Royal Lake) is one of two major lakes in Yangon. It is an artificial lake channeled from the Inya Lake to supply clean water for the city during British colonial time in 18th century. Today, it is a great spot for relaxing. Visitors can also get a good view of the Shwedagon Pagoda.
The centerpiece of the lake is a hamsa-bird-shaped floating barge on the eastern shoreline, which is a concrete replica of a Burmese royal barge built in 1972 and contains a buffet restaurant that offers delicious cuisine and a great lake view. The lake has a circumference of 5 miles and a depth of 20 to 45 inches. It is a part of the Kandawgyi Nature Park, which is surrounded by the Yangon Zoological Garden, Aquarium, Hotel Nikko Royal Lake, Kantharyar Hospital, and many restaurants.
