Myanmar Launches E-visa System for Tourists
The Ministry of Immigration and Population of Myanmar officially launched an online tourism visa application system on September 1, 2014. Travelers can now apply for a Myanmar tourist visa at home instead of going to a Myanmar embassy. Non-tourist visas would not be available through the new system. Meanwhile, at the initial stage, travelers with e-visa are only permitted to enter Yangon International Airport.
Applicants need to fill out an online visa at the website of the Ministry of Immigration and Population of Myanmar at least one week before their trip and pay the application fee online using Visa, Master, or Credit/ Debit. The processing time is a maximum of 5 working days for granting an e-Visa. Once the application has been processed by the Ministry of Immigration and Population, applicants will receive a visa approval letter via email. With a print-out of the electronic approval letter, they are able to have their passport stamped upon arrival. To apply for the tourist e-visa, the validity of the passport must be at least (6) months.
The online visa costs US$50, and the same visa obtained through an embassy abroad costs US$30, this will change later, however. The e-visa approval letter must be used within 90 days from the date of issue. If it is expired, the entry will be denied. A single tourist visa allows a maximum of 28 days in Myanmar.
